What can we do? Mail our councillors/government. (Atleast got to try)How can we start spreading the word? The billboards worked but maybe it’s time to put the some sort of stickers on our cars and have t-shirts or something to make it spread faster. There are millions of Canadians in the same situation.I would be at the August protests but we need to be in numbers that it’s time the government stops fucking around and starts taking us seriously.Sauce – https://ift.tt/3dG9mgY current government has a spending problem and is throwing money at the problem without solving anything. via /r/canadahousing https://ift.tt/2UTP7Wz

We need to start organizing now! Federal Government is trying to normalize $2000 apartments – from the current market price of about $1200 and the city is calling them ‘Affordable’ housing units. This will become the norm throughout the country if we let them get their way

I consider myself to be an extremely harsh critic, usually to the detriment of my own enjoyment. So, I understand what it feels like. I know how easy it is to dismiss someone’s life’s work based on literary criterion. There’s this little series out there, I’m sure everyone has heard of, called “The Wheel of Time.” I have had quite the turbulent relationship with this series. I unabashedly used to talk down the series whenever I got the chance. I hated everything about it, always feeling bewildered with the amount of praise it would receive. I still came back to it, though, always likening it in my mind to a morbid curiosity in exploring bad writing than any actual affectation to the story. But then it hit home. I realised something. I kept coming back to this series whenever I felt depressed or frustrated in other aspects of life. Subconsciously, I would pick it up, and afterwards, feel just a little bit better. Life’s problems didn’t seem as daunting as they had before. It was this inexplicable and bucolic charm, that no matter how much I tried to downplay the series’s issues and weaknesses, would always find a way to help me when I felt down.I have come to understand that the real strength of a book doesn’t lie in its literary merit – even though I still enjoy those books more in terms of the actual reading – but in the feelings it elicits for the reader. That is why we can all have such different experiences with different books. via /r/books https://ift.tt/3jCZNmJ

I finally understood what Anton Ego meant when he said, “In the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism deeming it so.”

For context i’m in Quebec. In 2019 i was living in a condo and paying my electricity bill regularly without giving it much thought. Then i went on a month-long trip and when i returned i noticed through my online HydroQuebec portal that my power consumption looked exactly the same as when i wasn’t out of town. I did a few tests myself (flipped off every breaker for 2h and checked consumption during that time the next day) before calling customer service. Every single employee basically told me i was crazy but i kept calling back until someone agreed to send a technician to my place. Lo and behold for the entire time i was living there and likely every person before me, i had been paying for my neighbour’s electricity (much larger unit than mine) and she had been paying for mine due to the wrong meter being assigned to my unit… The building was built in 2005 which also means that from 2005 to 2019 those units’ tenants were paying for each other’s electricity! It was a long process after to actually get it properly resolved (i’m talking months) but they ended up refunding me retroactively for the last 3 years.TL;DR: i’m sure it’s extremely rare, but make sure you’re actually paying for your own electricity! via /r/PersonalFinanceCanada https://ift.tt/3dxgAUz

Our exciting high is that we paid off our primary household’s mortgage today, 4 months early. The depressing low is that my husband was approached about applying for a new job, same company but different division. Going from supervising 4 to 25, 5% travel to 25% travel, and 8-hour days to some 12-hour days due to offices across North America. He heard yesterday that he was the chosen candidate and we waited for the offer letter today. There was zero salary increase. He will be declining the offer in the morning. How can a company justify this? via /r/PersonalFinanceCanada https://ift.tt/3dqvGeu

Adam Vaughan is an MP for Spadina-Fort York, and also Parliamentary Secretary for Housing, most of us probably know who he is in this group. I believe we need to be calling for his resignation due to his stalling on doing anything about the housing affordability crisis for several reasons:He’s saying his focus is on foreign corporate speculation, but he has failed to define what this is. In BC we now have the Land Ownership Transparency Registry, and we know that a majority of our foreign buyers are NOT companies at all, just individuals with wealth, or money. By saying “off-shore institutional”, Adam is targeting a non-existent fraction of a small part of the housing equation in Canada. In other words: he’s trying to create a bogeyman, trying to create the appearance of doing something, and indeed would actually do something… against a housing factor that is a non-issue in Canada. Foreign corporate participation is basically nil. We can’t allow Adam to try to scapegoat and let the Feds drag their heels on this issue. If he wanted to say “any numbered company, Canadian or otherwise, where the beneficial owner is a foreign national” then we have a different story, but he hasn’t said anything to this effect. He has repeatedly said that the home equity of existing owners must be protected. The equity of a home in a massive housing bubble is not actual equity, it’s vapor. Anyone with a mortgage doesn’t have any home equity, because the banks own the home. The banks have right to that equity, by law. By claiming that this is home owners who own the equity, Adam is trying to create a sympathetic defense for doing nothing about the housing crisis. This is yet another psychological tactic being employed to help him stall, blame non-existent buyers, and give the illusion of taking action to Canadians. It’s clear with every tweet Adam makes that he has no sincere interest in calling our housing crisis an actual crisis, let alone doing anything concrete about it. Contrast that with the policies and ideas being proposed by political parties in Ontario (https://gpo.ca/housing/), the BC NDP government ($2b for affordable housing, implemented and increased many taxes on investors / speculators), and also the Federal PPC and NDP… it’s clear that Adam’s endless-words-and-sympathy tactic is designed to stall Federal action, and when it puts its words into action it targets… a bogeyman that will have no impact. We don’t know how many investment properties Adam or the rest of the Liberals own, but it’s safe to say that these stalling tactics are a major red flag and a sign of a politician who wants to distract and deflect Canadian anger.I submit to the group that we call on the PM to #FireAdamVaughanPlease feel free to add any other evidence / arguments, and criticism is welcome as well.https://ift.tt/2UIVagI via /r/canadahousing https://ift.tt/3jfXgPc
