It’s clear that our current politicians are acting for their own best interests – and the interests of whoever lines their pocket with the most cash.Look at the platforms currently being put out by the Liberals, Conservatives and NDP. They obviously understand the major issues/talking points facing Canadians today, but their solutions to the problems are nothing but a facade. As younger Canadians come of age to vote, work and contribute to Canadian society, they come to realize that Canada is not all that it’s made up to be. Especially if you don’t come from a family of wealth.Getting into the workforce is a challenge. Making enough money to live modestly on your own is strenuous. Owning a home is unfeasible. Getting ahead in life when we are starting from so far behind the older, lucky generations is next to impossible. And it’s only going to get worse as time moves forward. Older generations will keep stacking their assets and leveraging them for more cash and assets. While we will continue to put our toonies into a piggy bank in the hopes that someday it will turn into a minimal down payment for a 300 square foot home.Meet the Modern Innovation Party of Canada. We will transform our current, outdated system and bring forth new policies, and new opportunities for any Canadian who desires it.This isn’t about “getting back at boomers” or punishing them. This is about not taking any more shit and enacting real change that can better every. single. Canadian.Canada is a rich country. Rich in land, rich in resources, rich in money. So why why why do we concentrate our resources to a few select areas?Question: Why does real estate make up such a significant portion of our GDP?Answer: Because our politicians saw it as an easy way to enrich the already rich, at the expense of the poor and middle class. And at the expense of other industries.Question: Why do we concentrate our population in a few select metropolises?Answer: Because those cities are the only places in the country where high-paying, industry-leading jobs can be found. The ProposalReign in real estate prices by:a) Temporary ban on foreign investments. After ban lifts, tax the shit out of them.b) Increase interest rates for investment properties. Right now, if you buy an investment property (in addition to your primary residence), you will see a 0.5 – 0.75% increase in your interest rate for said investment property. I propose this increases to a 2.5 – 3% increase (over primary residence). This would alleviate a lot of buying pressure and make amateur landlords reconsider their too-good-to-be-true investments. And it wouldn’t cause people who only own one home to get under water.c) Temporary (maybe not temporary) decrease of immigration from 400k to 50k per year.d) Ban blind bidding.- Increase corporate tax rates (on corporations who make an income of over $500k per year).- Encourage innovative industries to sprout in Canada. Let’s start thinking forward about where the world is heading. Technology isn’t going away. Wouldn’t it be nice if Canada turns into a tech hub spot for the world? It’s too bad Canada was on the leading edge of both the artificial intelligence industry and the blockchain industry before lack of funding and regulations basically squashed them.- Build outwards from our main metropolises. The reason why people want to live in Toronto and Vancouver is because they have the best jobs, plenty of culture and many social opportunities. I know personally, if I could get a sliver of that stuff (the job opportunities mostly) in another smaller city, I would have no problem moving there. It’s time to start sprawling outwards and upwards. We are the second largest landmass in the WORLD. We have the resources. Let’s start bringing tech jobs and other leading industries to our secondary cities and BUILD THEM UP.Let’s strategically pick 8-12 cities across the country to throw additional resources at and encourage companies to plant their feet there. Let’s encourage new graduates, immigrants and all others to move to these mid-size cities and in 10 years, we will have created a nice sprawl for our population and jobs. As an example, I live in the outer GTA but would love to move to Kingston, or even Sault Ste. Marie if there were some booming industries and growing infrastructure there.- Let’s provide a real solution for homeless and hopeless people to get back on their feet and find meaning in life. Let’s give them a purpose. People go down the wrong path early in life and the way Canadian life is set up, it’s almost impossible to get out of whatever hole they’re in. We will provide subsidized 6-12 months of mental health therapy, drug rehab and integration into subsidized education of their choice. With job placement to follow.- Speaking of subsidized education, let’s select 10-20 leading careers/industries and subsidize them (at least 75% of the way) for ALL CANADIANS. Computer programming, healthcare, healthcare technology, social assistance, information technology, you name it. Let people choose one of these booming career paths and let’s help them get through it. After schooling, get a job placement in one of the aforementioned 8-12 cities that we plan to build up.Other issues such as climate change, pharmacare, dental care, etc. should be tackled too. This is the first iteration of the platform.Of course, this is something I just spitballed up. But I would love to hear your opinions on this. Let’s find some solutions to our common problems.Voters are becoming younger and younger. At the very least, we can make some noise and put some pressure on the other parties. via /r/canadahousing https://ift.tt/3Ct5LxP

Anyone want to start a new political party with me? Let’s put some pressure on the outdated political and monetary system.

My son is an accountant with dual citizenship. He got a job offer for $80K in the US in a low cost of living city. Currently we’re in a high cost of living city in Canada and he makes 60K.I’d hate for him to go. Since my husband died he’s the only family I have locally. But he’s insisting life just gets harder and harder in Canada and that if he wants to own a house he has to go.I’ve tried to raise the healthcare point. He points out 91% of Americans have health insurance. Plus you get it free from medicare when you’re above 65 and his job is a good plan. I say he could try to get a better job in Canada, he says he’s already above the median pay here. I point out the discrimination that exists there. He reminds me it’s a very liberal state/city he’d be moving to. Is there anything I’m missing to point out to him about why life in Canada is better/less expensive? via /r/PersonalFinanceCanada https://ift.tt/3fPunXF

Being one of the more frugal members of this board, my total yearly expenses for everything before 2020 added up to 11k, 3k of which was food. That was 27% of my expenses going to food.Due to the massive rise in food prices in early 2020, I had to increase my food budget by 50% and decrease the quality of my food. My total yearly expenses increased from 11k to 12.5k, with food now accounting for 36% of my total expenses. Now it’s 2021. Prices have increased a bit further, but really it’s the lowered food quality that has become unsustainable. I’ve had to raise my food budget again. I wanted to raise it from 4.5k to 6k, but oddly that’s just not making that much of a difference, so I’m thinking of raising it to 7.5k (about 20.50 dollars a day). I’ve also raised by entertainment expenses by 450 dollars a year (I got into photography, shit’s expensive). My total yearly expenses now add up to 16k (up from 11k just two years before!), 47% of which goes to food.ExpenseYearly AmountPercentageFood7.5k47%Housing2.5k15.5%Transportation2k12.5%Electricity1.3k8%Computer, communications, misc1k6.25%Entertainment7004.5%Extra, unforeseen1k6.25%Total16k100%My total cost of living going up 45% in two years is already kind of crazy, but almost half of my expenses going to food alone seems absurd…Is it just me? via /r/PersonalFinanceCanada https://ift.tt/3zUrXyI

Did you know that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle — the famed author of Sherlock Holmes — was once tasked to solve a real life crime? The case involved a savage murder, stolen jewelry, an international manhunt, and a wily maidservant who went to her grave knowing far more about the killing than she had revealed…But I’m getting ahead of myself. So let’s get our pipes and funny hats and start from the beginning. The murdahAt 82 years old, and living in one of the wealthy neighborhoods of Glasgow (West Princes Street), Marion Gilchrist had a quiet life. She lived alone, but for her hired help, a maid named Helen Lambie. On December 21st, 1908, Lambie left Gilchrist alone “to fetch the evening newspaper.” Just after 7:00 PM someone came into Gilchrist’s house, attacked, and beat the elderly woman to death.According to Lambie, she returned from her errand in time to hear a noise in the house then see a man rushing down the stairs. She then found her employer dead on the dining room floor. Papers in the house were “ransacked.” Money lying in plain sight was untouched, as was a substantial jewelry collection. The only thing missing was a diamond brooch.Lambie alerted the authorities. A doctor identified a chair leg as the murder weapon. There was no sign of forced entry.Befuddled and corrupt police just wanted a suspectGiven the lack of forced entry, police assumed Gilchrist had known the attacker. Within 5 days, the authorities arrested a suspect: Oscar Slater. Lambie even identified him as the man she’d seen running out of the house that night.Slater, a 36-year-old Jewish man, was a bit of a traveler. He’d previously lived in New York, Paris, Brussels, and Glasgow. He and his wife had rented a flat near Gilchrist’s home.Being short on money, Slater had apparently pawned a brooch of his own earlier that month. The police found out about the pawned brooch when Slater tried to sell the slip for a ticket to America. They saw a suspect attempting to flee the country. However, Lambie was asked to identify the brooch in the pawnshop. She said it wasn’t the stolen item. The police were undeterred. Despite not being one, they suspected Slater of being a pimp since the man’s wife had worked at a music hall and was thought to “entertain men at home in [her husband’s] absence.” Oh and according to reports, they had stated:“All murders are committed by undesirables; Oscar Slater is an undesirable; therefore, Oscar Slater committed the Gilchrist murder.”(Dynamite logic, of course!)The game is afootSlater, too trusting the judicial system, waved extradition and came back to Glasgow to stand trial. Maybe he thought the evidence was lacking. Maybe he just thought innocence would win out. Either way, he was wrong. The Scottish court convicted and sentenced Slater to death in 1909. The verdict generated quite the public outcry. Thus, though scheduled for execution, Slater’s lawyer gathered signatures for a petition and successfully got his client’s sentence commuted – he was now sentenced to life in prison. The public outcry found its way to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s ears. And his Holmes-inspiring mind did not like what it heard. The science of deductionSo in 1909, the famed author began to re-examine the facts of the case, using some Sherlockian methods. And he noticed some glaring holes in the police’s case. The broach Slater had pawned belonged to a friend, a woman who testified to the fact. And some rumors surfaced that a few witnesses in the police’s case had been coached. This included their star witness, Lambie. This first examination spurred Doyle further. He interviewed new witnesses. He searched for additional evidence. (He even covered some of Slater’s legal fees). In 1912, Doyle published his findings in The Case of Oscar Slater. However, it wasn’t enough to garner a retrial. He lost hope and set it aside.Seven years later, the widow of a Glasgow police officer blew the thing wide open when she reached out to Doyle. She revealed that her husband had kept documents revealing withheld evidence hidden from the public. These documents contained evidence of suspects within Gilchrist’s family – suspects who apparently had powerful friends.Justice is served, far far too lateA journalist published a piece on the case, highlighting Doyle’s earlier work. At around this same time, Doyle also received a personal plea from Slater himself. The falsely accused man wanted Doyle to keep digging. So he did.Unfortunately, it took years before Slater was deemed innocent. He was not released from prison until 1927, nearly 20 years after the murder itself. His name was cleared. The real killer “remains unknown.” (sure he does, sure.)Get your magnifying glass and examine deeperWild, huh? Stinks that it took so long to prove Slater’s innocence, but at least it happened I guess. If you want to check out some longer reads on this one:Here’s a piece from the New York Times on the story that includes a brief review of Margalit Fox’s book on the subject via /r/books https://ift.tt/3rG0CgH
