I would like to formally apologize to Alexandre Dumas for underestimating him. I looked at the date and length and thought it would be boring, and I even made sure to download a few other books before I started reading it on the assumption that I would need a break during the tedious parts. There?? Were?? No?? Tedious parts???? I stayed up until 4 in the morning to read the first half and only fell asleep when my eyes could not process any more words. I don’t know how Dumas manages to write 1200 pages of nonstop action and intrigure & I am in awe! Les Mis is around the same length, and as much as I loved it, there were definitely parts where Hugo went off on long tangents and my eyes sort of glazed over.Obviously there were some parts of the book that have aged poorly, but on the whole it was an incredible journey and I’m so glad I finally picked it up.ETA: Woah, I was not expecting this to get so much attention. I’ve seen a lot of commenters saying this convinced them to pick up the book, so yay! I hope you have fun reading! And naturally some people disagree with me and didn’t like it, and that’s cool too :)As for all the people asking about the title, it was just a bit of hyperbole on my part! I didn’t think anyone was straight-up lying, but I assumed they were exaggerating considering the other books I’ve read that were over 1000 pages all had quite a lot of filler. I was happy to find that wasn’t the case!ETA 2: I read the English translation by Robin Buss 🙂 via /r/books https://ift.tt/2Ugw4Wv

English Captain Charlie May wrote in his diary on June 17, 1916″. . . I must not allow myself to dwell on the personal – there is no room for it here. Also it is demoralising. But I do not want to die. Not that I mind it for myself. If it be that I am to go, I am ready. But the thought that I may never see you or our darling baby again turns my bowels to water. I cannot think of it with even the semblance of equanimity. My one consolation is the happiness that has been ours. Also my conscience is clear that I have always tried to make life a joy for you. I know at least that if I go you will not want. That is something. But it is the thought that we may be cut off from each other which is so terrible and that our Babe may grow up without my knowing her and without her knowing me. It is difficult to face. And I know your life without me would be a dull blank. Yet you must never let it become wholly so. For to you will be left the greatest charge in all the world; the upbringing of our baby. God bless that child, she is the hope of life to me. My darling, au revoir. It may well be that you will only have to read these lines as ones of passing interest. On the other hand, they may well be my last message to you. If they are, know through all your life that I loved you and baby with all my heart and soul, that you two sweet things were just all the world to me.I pray God I may do my duty, for I know, whatever that may entail, you would not have it otherwise.”Capt. Anyone who uses Spotify as much as I do knows their shuffle algorithm is designed to feel random but isn’t really random.Spotify prefers the same subset of songs you listen to the most and plays them in random order when you hit shuffle on a playlist, this is a problem because you end up losing almost 40-50% percent of your music.Enter: Spotify Unbiased Shuffle ⚡ A tool to provide true randomized and unbiased shuffling of playlists, and as a bonus, you can combine multiple playlists into one and play them all at once with unbiased shuffling. ✨I have already discovered a lot of new music with this tool by merging my playlists with public playlists. 🔥If you like this, show some love by starring the repo on Github:Github: https://ift.tt/3xMjH28 https://ift.tt/37HmCP4 via /r/Frontend https://ift.tt/2VRV07e

There were four other bids of more than $1 million.”There’s a lot of anger among Canadians who earn money here that they’ve been priced out of the market. There is some degree of anxiety about how people are going to compete with these hyper-inflated prices.”Foreign students drive marketAs more people get exposure to Canada as an offshoot of globalization, the overseas investor market will rise, Hlinka said. As an instructor at George Brown College in Toronto, he has seen an explosion in the number of foreign students.”When their parents come to visit, they get an idea of what real estate costs here, and they can’t believe how cheap it is. They want to buy because they think it’s a bargain.”In addition to China, investors pouring money into real estate are flocking to Canada from the Middle East, Korea, Russia, India and the Philippines as well, said Tony Ma, who owns HomeLife Landmark Realty in Markham. Moreover, to control prices, the Chinese government allows each family there to bank finance only two properties — one to live in and one to invest in — and buyers must pay 100 per cent cash for anything above the two-property limit, Ma said. Not only are prices in Canada more affordable, homes and condos are a better value proposition, since they come ready to move into, unlike in China, where buyers get a concrete shell they have to pay to finish, he said.”Almost 10 years have past, have the government done something such as Foreign Buyer Ban? No but the liberal Government has promised that If re-elected and starting 2022 they gonna tax foreign buyer at 1%.I have heard from an Asian guy at work who said to me:” If you are too kind, generous and tolerating, you are actually very stupid and you nothing but a pure idiot.” I didn’t agree then but not now. Also feeling strange that there was no “racism” concern back then for CBC reported like that at such level of transparency? Why?And I believe the principal residence capital gains tax-free law applies to foreign buyers such as foreign students who may even stay here temporarily, if I am wrong pls correct me. via /r/canadahousing https://ift.tt/3xKc4Jx
