I often wait to read the ‘it’ book of the moment—and when I finally catch up its a glorious thing when the read really is as good as everyone said it was. When Educated by Tara Westover came out everyone was raving about. I work in publishing and people were bananas about it even long before it came out. I just put it in my bottomless tbr pile and started it a few days ago. Reading it now, and it is stunning—gorgeous, unsentimental writing. There is so much push and pull in the writing, so much tension in how Tara was raised and how she learns to take in the world around her. She’s raised in an extreme family that deals in absolutes, but she finds cracks that hint at a different world beyond the mountain. There is crazy tension between the paranoid, off-the-grid world Tara was raised in and the world of others she fights to join. It only grows when she gets in to college at 16, dirt poor and having never seen a classroom (she didn’t have a birth certificate until she was 10 or 11, her actual birthdate a fluid thing). There is so much pride and shame, power and fear, curiosity and anger—in short it is everything people raves about and more. It’s a fierce and questing memoir, so worthwhile if anyone is looking to fall in deep with a read.I’ll leave the typos there. If you’ve read another book that lived up to the hype, I’d love to know! via /r/books https://ift.tt/3qCXdQX

Not sure how long this will last as it’s normally only been on weekends for the past two years but if you can, c’mon down! City workers have cleared the “upper loop” completely so it’s dry, the sidewalks are in decent shape, skating rinks are busy. And the usual crew is clearing the tennis courts as we speak. As much as I’ve enjoyed the calf workout of trudging through my as yet unplowed neighbourhood, this is way safer and more enjoyable. It’s absolutely magical being out here! via /r/toronto https://ift.tt/3fDqvIK

The fairness (treating all religions equal) should be enough to end this practice; but the simple fundamentals of removing duplication (separate education boards, trustees, 2 schools in same areas etc) is a logical reason. Selling off the surplus schools after combining them to reduce debts or for affordable housing or for parks: anything else is another reason. A common secular education I’m thinking would probably help reduce social divides. (Parents, Sunday school, Mosques etc. can still teach their kids their chosen religion.)Legally I know Quebec, Newfoundland, and Manitoba all eliminated funding denominational separate schools. Only 3 provinces have it in the Charter to support it. Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan. Can’t there be a constitutional amendment to change that though? The Charter has been changed before.Financially The Roman Catholic school system gets about 33% of Ontario’s $24-billion education budget, but only 23% of electors direct their education taxes to separate schools. That means everyone, including those who have selected to not fund catholic schools are funding catholic schools. Source:https://ift.tt/3GMAtUp can we make this an election issue; assuming there is the will to do it; comments? via /r/ontario https://ift.tt/3GwHw3p

With an Ontario election coming up, I think we should make ending separate school systems an election issue.

Everytime I get an audiobook narrated by her, I absolutely love it, I think she could read me the phone book and I’d give it 5 stars. I didn’t even know I loved her so much until I recently picked up an audiobook by someone else and I didn’t find it half as engaging, and then I picked up a romance (which isn’t my typical genre, it’s something I’m really just starting to get into) that she narrates and I LOVED it.Anyway, if you have any audiobook narrators that you love or you think are similar to Julia Whelan, pleas recommend them to me. Also, if you have a particular favorite book that Julia Whelan narrates, please let me know. via /r/audiobooks https://ift.tt/3tkMiNF

It is understandable to be disappointed when comparing Constantine to the Matrix(1999). Both movies’ lead roles were played by Keanu Reeves but only one would turn out to be a perennial masterpiece. That’s just fair. But what’s not fair are the overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics and poor reception from audiences for “Constantine”. While the plot itself isn’t anything to write home about movie, it was an overall well crafted movie with some cyntillating lore, characters and style. Whats more confusing to me is how such a thrilling movie failed amongst audiences. Was it just me then? Or did this movie deserve more succes? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3qbZRwQ
