My 18 year old daughter and I just picked up The Final Flaw, a science fiction book about the importance of neurodiversity that released this week. She has Tourette’s syndrome and immediately upon seeing the main character had it too, we purchased it.I was honestly floored. Often times books written about characters with disabilities use them as a way for the reader to feel pity. This one was the opposite. The book takes place ~25 years in the future where genetic manipulation is becoming mainstream and society is just beginning to remove traits like autism and Tourette’s syndrome. The main character, despite his disadvantages, has really positive self-talk and loves himself despite his imperfections. He is deeply conflicted about removing these traits from society and is put in a position where he is at the center of the conflict. The book was great, but the best part is the way that it has impacted my daughter. It’s the fastest I’ve ever seen her read a book, and she kept bothering me to finish it so we could talk about the story. I could tell that she loved reading a book where the main character that had Tourette’s, and where genetic differences where at the core of the story. For me it was eye opening in a different way. The book is set in the first person, and reading about the main character describe their tics provided me a way to see the world through her eyes for a little while. We’ve talked more openly about her condition in the last couple days than we have in years. The book was fantastic, but it has me a little bit sad and wishing there were more books like it out there! We need more representation like this in fiction. If you’ve got anything else like it, please let me know. via /r/books https://ift.tt/FKPbpVY

I went to the Nofrills by Front and Sherbourne to buy some groceries. I get to the counter and open up my backpack and lo and behold, I forgot my wallet–stupid me. I told the cashier to hold my items for me and I was going to run and get my wallet, but it’ll take me half an hour to come back. However, the gentleman behind me offered to pay, no questions asked. All I could really say was thank you because I was speechless and shocked. I told him, “I don’t even know how to repay you!” It was 50 dollars worth of groceries, which is already a lot, and he told me to pay it forward. I’m really looking forward to do the same to someone in need. This city has kindness within, it’s not always bad.I hope this man wins the lottery. If you’re reading this, thank you again and I wish you all the good fortune in your lifetime. via /r/toronto https://ift.tt/h840mtQ

Within a few months of moving into a new home we had a lighting strike near our home. Close enough to fry everything that was plugged in. We lost all appliances and the electrical items that were not on a surge protector. The surge protectors were fried.Insurance company suggested that we put everything we can on a surge protector and add the whole house surge protector. Talked with an electrician and they quoted me about $2k for adding it. Electric company added it instead for a measly $5 a month. Electrician had suggested I call electric company. He did the repair work from the strike. Have everything on a surge protector since. Recently had another strike that hit a tree near internet box outside. Only thing we lost was the modem this time.Built for life is closely tied to maintain for life. via /r/BuyItForLife https://ift.tt/duSPWh5

Tons of people have read “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and it absolutely deserves the fantastic reputation it has, but “Last Chance to See” is just incredible and a complete hidden gem of a book. It’s a true travelogue of Douglas Adams and David Carwardine traveling to visit various endangered species while they still can. It’s funny as hell, but also really poignant and insightful. Cannot recommend highly enough. Anyone else here read it?An example:We asked, tentatively, if we could perhaps take a snake bite detector kit with us to Komodo. “‘Course you can, ‘course you can. Take as many as you like. Won’t do you a blind bit of good because they’re only for Australian snakes.” “So what do we do if we get bitten by something deadly, then?” I asked. He blinked at me as if I were stupid. “Well, what do you think you do?” he said. “You die, of course. That’s what deadly means.” via /r/books https://ift.tt/LJFm5Bp

“Last Chance to See” by Douglas Adams is easily the funniest book I’ve ever read. Completely underappreciated.
