I was riding my bicycle south on Laird Ave. This woman pulls up beside me and says, Hey, did you lose a bike bag? I looked down at my rack and sure enough it was gone. She said It had dropped off my rack at the last light. I turned around and just then another woman pulled up and asked if i had lost a bag. I said yes and she held up my bag. She said, I saw you drop it and i was following you to give it back.I thanked her very much and we parted ways. Thanks ladies for getting my stuff back and reminding me that Toronto is the good. via /r/toronto https://ift.tt/DouCMTG

Headed in to my 30’s and still live with my parents. I’ve got a decent paying job (around 60K/year at the moment) and thought that might be a good jump off salary to finally get my own place. I’ve got about 50K worth of a down payment but learned it’s best to not spend more than 35% of your monthly take-home on mortage. Some online calculators said I should be looking at stuff around 100-200k. Slim pickings….Okay, maybe I’ll have some better luck renting. If I apply the same 35% rule here, I’m looking to spend max $1500/mth on rent to live within means. There’s more options, but holy some of these places….1500 for a toilet and empty space around it to put my stuff.Checked out a couple places in Manitoba but didn’t find much more luck there. Feeling really down now as I was really forward to finally getting out on my own. Just looking to discuss I guess. And ask: should I just start accepting the fact that if I want to move out, it’ll be in to a shit box and if I don’t like it that’s too bad? via /r/ontario https://ift.tt/OUVc7v0

I am looking for songs that sonically take over me completely, soundscapes that are full to the brim with nowhere to go. Or it may be a kind of emotional thing, like crescendos, time signature changes, lyrics that are “deep/strong”… Extreme music that is of high quality, production… good art essentially! Essentially all about the sound; something that fills you up in all kinds of ways. The ephemeral is hard to put words onto…Here are some songs for reference:Comet Is Coming (NPR tiny desk) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpfpYTmohAk (first song and second song)Howie Lee – The Gate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaHHaUG-ybM (VIDEO!!!)Terry Riley – Persian Dervishes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqQ59i4PmGEKinoko Teikoku – Whirlpool https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33JNwxSNNNYKoen Groeneveld – 1981 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QDuudMELBIYann Tiersen – Ker al Loch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHiYco6Sd_k (VIDEO!!!)Bonzai – I Did https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbf1tPbTW7w (VIDEO!!!)Idles (NPR tiny desk) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMehItNQKAAFloating Points – Falaise https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJfpOgQcq9IAsa Chang & Jun Ray – Hana https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPrQ6HSQkAc (VIDEO!!!)Rage Against the Machine – Bombtrack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVck6DkOi38Akiko Kiyama – Rainbow In The Hand https://ift.tt/tOFUzbl classical pieces like Tchaikovsky (Piano Concerto #1), or Lizst (complex arrangements), very dramatic intense pieces. I’m not so familiar with classical music although I love it more than anything, so recommendations in that category are very very welcome.Perhaps it is a bit of an abstract question, so the examples are to give an idea of what floats my boat. Any genre… as long as it takes over everything in me! If the video is crazy (denoted above with “VIDEO!!!”) that helps :)I would be so so grateful of any cool recommendations. Hope it is the right place to ask. I didn’t know much about contributing to Open Source 12 months ago, I just heard it was a great career accelerator and a lot of fun.So I listened to a lot of smart folks about how newcomers to coding can use Open Source to advance their careers. This is what I learned about how to get started.Pick the language you are the best at. If you’re not at least an advanced beginner in a language work on tutorials until you get there.Search for an Open Source project in that language – good places to look are https://ift.tt/KvOZyeP / or https://ift.tt/yUjgaOM 2 or 3 projects.Watch all 2-3 projects for 1-2 weeks (i.e. join their community on Discord / Slack, and subscribe to issue notifications). See how people contribute, how they talk to each other. and read all of the documentation.Based on that investigation, pick the one that seems most welcoming to you. Only pick one.Introduce yourself in the proper channels. Follow the introduction instructions!Read all of the open issues. Pick the one that you are most likely to do well. Work on that issue.Meanwhile, if you see someone else ask a question that you know the answer to based on reading ALL of the documentation, answer those questions. “I think the answer is this [and add link]. Community, please redirect me if I’m wrong.” *** helping in Open Source is more than coding, and this is a great way to ease the burden on the very busy Maintainers. ***When you finish the issue, follow the protocol to get a code review. Also, ask the appropriate channel for a Maintainer to double-check that you are following the correct process.Repeat steps 7-9 at least 5 times, preferably 10.Ask in a public channel, not privately, for an experienced Contributor or Maintainer to review your initial contributions to see what you are doing well and how you can improve. Now that you’ve worked on 10 issues, work on 20, then 30, then 40.Recommended: start reviewing others’ pull requests. Make sure you get advice from someone more experienced after your first one.Recommended: along the way, keep a weekly list of what you did, and what you learned. After at least 25 hours of contribution, but preferably 50, update your resume (that’s what #14 is for), and ask on a general or career channel if folks would give advice on your job search. “I’ve been working on Community AA for the last BB weeks and have done XX issues, YY pull requests, ZZ code reviews. Would someone be willing to share tips on my resume and or organizations you know who might be looking for an Engineer with these skills ” via /r/webdev https://ift.tt/i5jESav

I assume everyone else has noticed this, but as bad as inflation is the amount of food being cut out of serving sizes is hurting my wallet just as much, and has received almost none of the public attention.A “full size” bag of chips is 200 grams. An article I found from 2014 was arguing shrinkflation was a problem – when that same “full sized” bag was 280 grams.Dempsters bagels have substantially larger holes than any other brand, and are now listed at 75 grams each. A decade ago they were 90.A box of lemon cookies I bought last month had enough space for two more cookies at least in each row.And the same practice is obvious with toilet paper, shampoo, soap, and anything that can be manipulated. This is completely fucked. The bake shop at my grocery store hasn’t been doing this, but the largest corporations and “brand names” – the ones they say are best able to sell the most food for the lowest price – are the ones blatantly ripping us off.Is there anything Canadians can do? Any laws we have protecting consumers when companies arbitrarily cut their own costs when they’re clearly capable of providing what they have in the past?Regardless, this practice is completely reprehensible, inexcusable, and basic goddamn groceries shouldn’t be something I have to treat like a potential scam. Here’s a website that has recent examples of this trend, even if the page itself is straight out of 2004I think having a user-driven Canadian version of this – with retail pricing – would be a fantastic tool. via /r/canada https://ift.tt/opKa5Zm

I’m a longtime listener and I have listened to almost all episodes of TAL. I first got hooked in 2015, binged every archived episode from their website, and followed almost all subsequent episodes from there.I think around 2017 or 2018 there was a shift from slice of life stories to stories around Trump and the effects of his policies. I’m absolutely not a Trump supporter and these were/are important topics. Obviously world events from 2020 onwards have been insane, and so they’ve continued to do mostly current events related stories. But I just wish there was just a bit more of a balance between current event topics and the fun slice of life stuff.Anyone remember the episode about summer camp? Or the story about the police officer that tried to do it capture a squirrel that was stuck in someone’s house?I felt like TAL at this time told these really sweet and relatable stories that made me feel more connected to others. If this isn’t what TAL is about anymore then that’s okay, but I wonder if there are any podcasts that do fill this space? via /r/podcasts https://ift.tt/jTVcFL0

Back story: In my grade 10 politics class I found out every Canadian household was entitled to a free Canadian flag that has been flown on Parliament Hill. Since the program is quite popular the wait time for a flag that was flown on the Peace Tower was 40 years, and the wait for a flag that was flown on the East or West block was 20 years. Fast forward to last year, I got an email saying they were only months away from delivering my flag, and today….this arrived. 🇨🇦The wait time currently is 100 years… https://ift.tt/in6mGvq via /r/ontario https://ift.tt/3SAWp4B

35,000 words covers 3 to 5 studio albums and EPs. [Data scientist Matt Daniels] included mixtapes if the artist was short of the 35,000 words. Quite a few rappers don’t have enough official material to be included (for example, Biggie, Chance the Rapper, Queen Latifah, and El-P).Since the original release, there’s now a notable trend of fewer unique words among newer artists. This is easier to see in the following chart, where I highlighted each artist’s primary decade, based on album release dates for their vocabulary calculation (the first 35,000 lyrics).SourceThere was another study back in 2015 that took 99 of the highest-selling musicians (only four rap artists were included: Eminem, Jay-Z, Tupac, and Kanye West) and used “[each artist’s] 100 densest songs (by total number of words)” to determine vocabulary size. via /r/Music https://ift.tt/wBM3INu
