I’m not proud to say that it illuminated prejudiced beliefs I have about poverty. I’m grateful to the author for that lesson. One passage that sticks out is when Francie & Neely are getting vaccinated, and the doctor & nurse are degrading her muddy arms right in front of her, leaving her red-faced and ashamed. She & her brother had merely been making mud pies.Betty Smith did a phenomenal job of bringing me into the seemingly mundane, day-to-day “normalities” of being financially poor — the amount of free time spent fearing and stressing, creatively planning how to stretch several dollars, defending against the brutalities of the world. The shame. The groups of small children on their way to the dump to exchange scraps for pennies. The candy shop owner who tricks the children into thinking they have a shot at winning the bigger prizes.I am sad today after finishing this book, but I am grateful for it. via /r/books https://ift.tt/R4in1By

Hello everyone! I’m a college student in Philadelphia, who’s been staying in Ontario for basically the whole summer on a visitor visa. My boyfriend lives just an hour out from Toronto, and always asks how different it is from home, and what I’ve noticed is completely different so I figured I would share! Not once did I anticipate on staying here for the summer, but I had saved up prior and relied on impulse to be here. Crossing the border was rough, as I was stuck in secondary for hours, but they were just making sure I wasn’t a criminal and I get that. My first stop was to try Timmy’s, and oh boy I’m gladly addicted. The coffee is a lot stronger than Dunkin Donuts yet I do indeed prefer Dunkin’s doughnuts over anything. Mostly from nostalgia I think. I got homesick often, missing what was my normal at home such as sirens, going to the beach where I could swim in the actual ocean, and yes, target. Why is target not a big deal here? However, Ontario opened my eyes to the beauty of Canada. The air quality? I can actually breathe without suffocating from the pollution. I can see the stars and the sunsets are breathtaking. Every road feels the same, yet there’s so much nature to look at other than industrialized buildings. The sirens? Heard them about 3 times. It was weird knowing that there wasn’t a shooting happening a few blocks down. At night, it’s VERY quiet and beyond peaceful. The people are great as well. I’ve only encountered like 2 mean Canadians and it just seemed as though they had a rough day. You all hold the doors for one another and say hello to each other without knowing the person you’re speaking with. And “eh?” Haha. It’s been said so much I actually started saying it myself. I also noticed many people say “for sure” in drive thrus. I never realized how polite it is to say “pardon” instead of “what” too. The words centre, colour, and favourite still amuse me with the spelling on buildings. However, my biggest shock was how unpopular gas station food other than Timmy’s is. Wawa? Royal Farms? 7 Eleven? As an American, we actually usually grab dinner with gas station food. Speaking of gas, wow. I don’t know the conversion of how much it would be in liters, but it ran me up to 10 bucks a gallon where at home it’s about 4 bucks a gallon (converting to metric has been a bit rough too). I’ll make sure to never complain about gas at home again lol.Overall, this province is beautiful. The sunsets are still my favorite part, but I hope you enjoyed reading about my experience. I’m also sorry if this ever offends anyone, it was not my intention! via /r/ontario https://ift.tt/KPojIEN

I believe that Stoic philosophy is just as relevant today as it was in 2nd AD century Rome, or even 3rd century BC Athens. Ask me anything you want, especially about Stoicism or Marcus Aurelius. I’m an expert on how psychological techniques from ancient philosophy can help us to improve our emotional resilience today.Who am I? I wrote a popular self-help book about Marcus Aurelius called How to Think Like a Roman Emperor, which has been translated into eighteen languages. I’ve also written a prose biography of his life for Yale University Press’ Ancient Lives forthcoming series. My graphic novel, Verissimus: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius, will be published on 12th July by Macmillan. I also edited the Capstone Classics edition of Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations, based on the classic George Long translation, which I modernized and contributed a biographical essay to. I’ve written a chapter on Marcus Aurelius and modern psychotherapy for the forthcoming Cambridge Companion to the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius edited by John Sellars. I’m one of the founders of the Modern Stoicism nonprofit organization and the founder and president of the Plato’s Academy Centre, a nonprofit based in Athens, Greece.Proof:Blog PostTweet via /r/IAmA https://ift.tt/QU8Rzx7

Tonight, while working my second gig driving for Lyft I picked up a man and his family, he was visibly drunk and had an Albanian name (I later learned) but said he was Italian. We were bullshitting and things seemed cool, he asked if I had been to Europe, I said to the Basque Country once when I was little (Family’s Basque and Mexican) and I am planning a trip to Serbia. When he asked why, I said I was Serbian Orthodox. From there his demeanor changed. He said “I hate Serbs, they’re always causing problems in Europe”. He asked why I was orthodox and I explained that it was the first church that welcomed me with open arms without me being the ethnicity it was set up for and that my neighbors growing up were Serbian and didn’t care that “Mexicans” moved in to the neighborhood. Towards the end of the ride, he threatened my life, reported me to Lyft for “being drunk” and said I should go back to where I’m from. Thankfully Lyft reached out and asked for my side of the story. Never in a million years did I think I would ever experience hatred for being something I wasn’t .I want to end on a high note and say that I love the Serbian people and my Orthodox faith. via /r/serbia https://ift.tt/T42MEw9

Those answers will be posted soon, or you can see them on the VOD of my answers on the YouTube channel.Apologies for the stream-of-consciousness wall-of-text answers. The SignalR subreddit is pretty dead, which makes me cautious. If I want to push data to clients as soon as it’s calculated, is SignalR still the way to go? It seems to have benefits over polling a REST endpoint. If so, does anyone know the best practice for separating your logic from the SignalR hub? My instinct is to make my hub like a controller where all it does is call a “handler” class with my logic. Should I do that and inject a HubContext wherever I want to send data to clients? Or should I keep all my logic in the hub and have a backend service that sends data via the Hub endpoints? via /r/dotnet https://ift.tt/oEw6QyJ
