Best thing I’ve done to extend the life of my electrical items

Within a few months of moving into a new home we had a lighting strike near our home. Close enough to fry everything that was plugged in. We lost all appliances and the electrical items that were not on a surge protector. The surge protectors were fried.Insurance company suggested that we put everything we can on a surge protector and add the whole house surge protector. Talked with an electrician and they quoted me about $2k for adding it. Electric company added it instead for a measly $5 a month. Electrician had suggested I call electric company. He did the repair work from the strike. Have everything on a surge protector since. Recently had another strike that hit a tree near internet box outside.
