PSA: if you live in a condo/apartment building, make sure your electricity usage matches what the power company is charging

For context i’m in Quebec. In 2019 i was living in a condo and paying my electricity bill regularly without giving it much thought. Then i went on a month-long trip and when i returned i noticed through my online HydroQuebec portal that my power consumption looked exactly the same as when i wasn’t out of town. I did a few tests myself (flipped off every breaker for 2h and checked consumption during that time the next day) before calling customer service. Every single employee basically told me i was crazy but i kept calling back until someone agreed to send a technician to my place. Lo and behold for the entire time i was living there and likely every person before me, i had been paying for my neighbour’s electricity (much larger unit than mine) and she had been paying for mine due to the wrong meter being assigned to my unit… The building was built in 2005 which also means that from 2005 to 2019 those units’ tenants were paying for each other’s electricity! It was a long process after to actually get it properly resolved (i’m talking months) but they ended up refunding me retroactively for the last 3 years.TL;DR: i’m sure it’s extremely rare, but make sure you’re actually paying for your own electricity! via /r/PersonalFinanceCanada https://ift.tt/3dxgAUz
